Mahawu Mountain in Tomohon City, North Sulawesi Province

Aside from Lokon, there is another famous volcano located in Tomohon City. The name is Mahawu Mountain and it belongs to North Tomohon Sub-District. To be exact, the location is in Kakaskasen Satu Village. Also, it resides in the east of Lokon, so tourists can notice it easily. In terms of name, Mahawu derives from the Minahasa Language which means “ashes”. The locals also often call it Roemengas Mountain! Even though the government has stated that the mountain is inactive, it still emits sulfuric gas! The good news is tourists are allowed to conduct trekking to the crater as long as they obey the instructions.

The Nuance
Now, let’s talk about the nuance. Like other mountains, visitors can feel the peaceful and refreshing atmosphere once they arrive at the site. Mahawu Mountain resides on 1311 meters above the sea level, after all. Not to mention many landscapes surround it, including local villages, forests, and farms. Plus, it becomes the habitat of exotic birds! What is more? The best attraction perhaps is the two pyroclastic craters located in the north part of the mountain (having the depth of 140 meters). For the information, those two often become an object of photography due to the unique shape and majestic appearance.

Exploring Mahawu Mountain
The first allure in Mahawu Mountain is the presence of villagers who conduct some activities in the foot of the mountain. Most of them work as a farmer who owns a land on that area, after all. That means tourists may encounter them while trekking. Thus, it is better to rest for a while and talk to those people. It is also recommended to take pictures with them as a souvenir!

Unlike other volcanoes in Indonesia, Mahawu Mountain doesn’t come with sandy landscape located near to the craters. Instead, it offers green and beautiful lands! Not to mention, tourists may see the stunning panorama once they reach the top of the mountain. The best view perhaps is the small protected forest with its colorful flowers. Plus, local farms are seen clearly from up there. Due to the reason, lots of people are interested in visiting the mountain to enjoy sightseeing and photography.

The next allure in Mahawu Mountain is the fact that it becomes the habitat of exotic birds. According to the locals, 20 species of birds live in that area! Usually, these animals are seen easily in the morning so tourists should come at the right time. Still, some species are active at night like Manguni and Celepuk.
